Research Objective: Characterize the composition and fabric of oil shale samples important in controlling material properties. Measure mechanical and elastic properties of oil shale at ultrasonic and seismic frequencies at pressures and temperatures relevant to in-situ production.
Mechanics-Based Modeling of Oil Shale
Research Objectives: Expand the capability of the Phase I Discrete Element Model (DEM) to include fluid flow and thermomechanical modeling, integration with experiments being performed by the Rock Physics team, coupling with finite element methods, and upscaling to the reservoir scale. Apply the new modeling capabilities to oil shale systems that have been characterized with detailed experimental data.
